Andrew Bucci
2023 Official Artist
Andrew Bucci (1922-2014) was one of Mississippi’s most celebrated and prolific visual artists whose modernist style has been described as eclectic, lyrical and calligraphic.
Bucci was born in Vicksburg and graduated from St. Aloysius High School. Around 1940, he began studying with prominent Mississippi artist Marie Hull.
After earning a degree in architectural engineering from Louisiana State University, Bucci was trained as a weather officer and served in the European Theater during World War II. With support from the GI Bill, he earned a BFA and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
His meteorology training led to a career with the National Weather Service near Washington, D.C., where he settled in 1956. Bucci maintained close ties with the Mississippi arts community and received lifetime achievement awards from the Mississippi Arts Commission and the Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters. His painting, “Figure in Green,” was the official artwork of the 2014 USA International Ballet Competition.
In recognition of his contributions to the arts and the centennial of his birth, the Mississippi Senate designated Jan. 12, 2022 “Andrew Bucci Day” in Mississippi. Centennial exhibitions honoring Bucci have been hosted by the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, Lauren Rogers Museum of Art, Vicksburg Art Association and Walter Anderson Museum of Art.
